Letters to No One: Life is like a video game

Dear No One,

Sometimes, when a situation feels like it fucking sucks or the path ahead looks like a dead end, this always mindset comes back to me.

Life is like a video game. Even when the level in front of you feels impossible, the ones who built it wouldn’t have made a world without a way forward. No game is unbeatable, and no level is impossible.

There’s always a way through or around, there’s always a trick to beating the beast. The goal remains the same, you just have to rethink your attack. [I mean yes, there are games that purposefully make you lose to something so you can be trapped for the plot, but you get what I’m saying]

Seriously, this got me through so many university projects in the last half of my university career. It helped me to think clearly about WHAT my lecturers were asking for in the papers, what they’re hoping to see from me, and how I can create that to the best of my ability.
The approach of each lecturer became obvious and some were harder to impress than others; some required me to get to class early, some wanted to see infinite prototypes, some wanted lots of analysis in our notes, some wanted you to show initiative and email them questions, one of them just simply hated girly designs while the rest of them were happy with that as long as I had a strong rationale.
Although I didn’t get perfect marks in every class, I did make it through in the end. I knew that it was important to put myself into my projects in order to be passionate about it, while knowing that it was important to integrate the changes my lecturers were asking for.

In game terms, you could burn through all your ammo, risk your health, and take down every zombie on the map… or you could clear only the ones in your way and step into the next room with your inventory full and your health bar intact.

So yeah, maybe this video game mindset can help you too.

Tandaan mo ako,

Jo
